Home Health Care in Berkeley: Falls And The Elderly

Falls when you’re elderly pose serious threats. Most people think of loose rugs, uneven tiles, a slippery bathtub floor, or stairs and take precautions to reduce the risk of a fall in those areas. There are other areas that are often overlooked. We take a closer look at four of them.

Door Sills

With an entry door or sliding patio door, there’s likely a height difference between the outside surface and the interior flooring. This difference can lead to tripping and falling. If it’s not possible to add a sloped grade to make it easier for people with mobility issues, make sure there is something the person can hold while stepping into or out of the house.

Raised Transition Strips

Transition strips cover the seam where two kinds of flooring meet. You’ll find transition strips where carpeting meets tile or wood flooring. Many transition strips are also raised by half an inch or more. If the transition strip sticks up, it’s easier to catch it while walking from room to room. That’s all it takes to lead to a fall.

When transition strips are needed, use the lowest height possible. Try to make them a color that stands out and is more noticeable. If the transition strip is within reach of a wall, consider adding a handrail to offer support when stepping over it.

New Decking

Pressure treated or freshly waterproofed wood used on decks can be slippery when wet. After a rainstorm, it’s important to wear shoes with good traction. If that’s not possible, avoid using the deck until it’s dried off. Also, watch for the growth of algae on wood that’s in shadier areas. Algae is very slippery when it gets wet.

Over-the-Counter Remedies and Medications

Many over-the-counter medications and prescription medications can lead to lightheadedness. This includes allergy medications, cold remedies, and high dosages of some vitamins and supplements. Make sure all possible side effects are understood before taking any medication. If a medication or supplement makes a senior feel dizzy, talk to a doctor. It may be recommended to take the medication before bed or when there’s an opportunity to sit or lay down for an hour or two.

Have someone on hand when medications are taken. Hire a caregiver for your mom and dad. Caregivers can watch for signs of lightheadedness and make sure your parent sits and rests until the dizzy spell passes. Caregivers are also happy to join your parents for walks or drive them to appointments and area businesses. Call a home care agency to find out more about their services.
