You Need Backup Plans for Your Backup Plans

You probably already have some basic plans for helping your senior as much as you can from where you are. But it’s important to know that you can’t always count on those initial plans to go exactly the way you want. You need backup plans and, probably, more importantly, you also need backup plans for your plan B. You never know when an emergency will hit, either for you or for your senior, so you need to prepare as much as you can when things are calm and going well.

Make Sure You and Your Senior Are Communicating

Communication is the cornerstone of any caregiving arrangement. You and your elderly family member need to have a plan for communicating. This really shouldn’t become something that feels like a chore to either of you, or it will become something that one or both of you are going to avoid. Set aside a specific time each week or every few days where you talk specifically about caregiving needs. Make sure that you’re talking, emailing, texting, or communicating in other ways regularly, too. The caregiving talks can be a separate task so that you make sure you cover everything.
